The Harkortsee, which directly adjoins the Hengsteysee was created as a reservoir in the early 1930s. Situated between Hagen, Herdecke and Wetter, it is a popular destination for excursions in the region.
Sailing enthusiasts, canoeists, windsurfers and rowers meet there. They share the lake with the passenger ship MS Harkort, which shuttles between the lake square in Wetter and the Zweibrücker Hof in Herdecke between April and October. It can accommodate a total of 250 people, 130 of them on the sun deck;
Would you rather be on land than on the water? In the north of the lake there is a cycle and hiking path that runs directly along the shore from Wetter to Herdecke. This is visibly separated between cyclists and pedestrians and is part of the Ruhrtal cycle path.
The Hagen shore of Harkortseeess is less well developed, so that Harkortsee unlike Hengsteysee cannot be constantly circumnavigated directly on the shore. On the southern shore of Harkortsee there are mainly camping and tent sites as well as a small marina.
If, however, you move a little away from the shore on the Hagen side, the lake can also be circumnavigated here between Kaisberg and the lake or in the middle via Kaisberg . This route is about ten kilometres.
